Yesterday, a black bear caught my dog napping. I saw the bear coming onto the lawn in front of the kitchen window. Suddenly there was a growling, whirring noise and my dog, Max, tore out after the bear, ran him off the lawn and into the woods. Then he went back to sleep.

Getting Close

Another amazing aerial photo by John Baleski shows the ice has broken up considerably in just the last few days. We have rescheduled for June 12 and it looks like we'll make it.

The View from Above

As you can see, there is a slight obstacle - ice.  Thanks to John Baleski for this aerial photo. There's nothing to do but wait.

Northern Pike

The ice should be off Iniakuk Lake in less than 2 weeks which mean the fish will be hungry.  So get out there and kiss a pike.

Countdown to 2012 Summer Season

We are 48 days out until the start of the Iniakuk Lodge 2012 season. Our sincere thanks to Brooks Range Aviation and Wright Air Service for making it all possible. Many thanks to all our guests past and present, and for the annual return of the nesting shorebirds, tree swallows, robins and of course their food source - mosquitoes.

If you haven't booked in yet, you're missing out.

The Northern Lights are Running Wild

Fantastic Northern Lights last night and -40F this morning, classic March weather.  It should warm up to -10F today and we'll be mushing dogs around the lake.

Here's what's happening tonight:

Forecast: Auroral activity will be active. Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be visible overhead as far south as Anchorage, Alaska, Trondheim, Norway and Igarka, Russia, and visible low on the horizon in Montreal, Stockholm, Helsinki and Yakutsk, Russia.
Forecaster Comments: The large solar event that took place on March 5 should lead to enhanced auroral activity starting on the 7th of March GMT. The solar debris was not directed toward Earth, but the advancing front will combine with a fast stream in the solar wind to produce auroral activity indexed at Kp=4 or greater.

Live Blogging Winter in Fairbanks

It's cold - it's dark still but getting lighter by the day.  The temps are accompanied by a bone-cracking wind chill that will make your implants fall out, no matter their location. Chickadees, Red Polls and a lone Slate-colored Junco duke it out in the bird feeder until the meager daylight fades.
